Shopping and markets
From Lo Pagán you have two weekly markets within walking distance, an indoor shopping centre five minutes away by car and the largest open-air shopping centre in the region half an hour away. The San Pedro market is on Monday morning, the Lo Pagán one on Thursday morning. Bear the siesta in mind: many smaller shops close between two and five.
The two weekly markets
San Pedro del Pinatar holds its market on Monday morning, roughly eight to two, in and around Avenida El Pilar and Avenida El Taibilla. Lo Pagán has its own market on Thursday morning, on Avenida Salzillo.
Vegetables, fruit, olives, herbs, clothing and household goods. These are not tourist markets but where the neighbourhood does its shopping, and you notice that in the prices.
Bring cash, cards are usually not accepted. And go early: towards the end the stalls start packing up and the choice thins out.
Dos Mares shopping centre
An indoor shopping centre about five minutes away by car, with a supermarket, fashion, places to eat and a cinema. This is the answer to an afternoon when it is forty degrees or when it rains, which does not happen often here but when it does it means it.
The cinema regularly shows films in the original language with subtitles. Useful to know if you travel with teenagers.
La Zenia Boulevard
The largest open-air shopping centre in the region, about half an hour's drive towards Torrevieja. Over 150 shops, wide avenues with palm trees, terraces and La Zenia beach around the corner.
Our tip: combine it with an afternoon at Playa La Zenia. Shop until about two, then into the sea. That is the open sea, so there you do get waves, unlike the Mar Menor.
Everyday shopping
For day to day needs there is a supermarket within walking distance of Casa Feliz and a bakery right by Casa Flamingo. Both are listed with addresses in our food and drink chapter.
If you want to do one big shop, the larger supermarkets on the main road are cheaper. They also stay open all day and do not close for the siesta.
Fresh fish you buy at the market or from the fishermen at the harbour, which around here is hardly a detour.
Shop hours and the siesta
Smaller shops and many family businesses close between roughly two and five in the afternoon and then reopen until eight or nine. Shopping centres, large supermarkets and businesses in the tourist area do not take that break.
On Sunday most things are closed, apart from the shopping centres and hospitality. The same goes for public holidays, and Spain has more of them than you are used to. Our festivals chapter lists which ones.
